BALTIC-FIT at the Smart Sea Centre of Excellence Annual Seminar

On 12 February 2026, members of the TalTech Estonian Maritime Academy and the Maritime Transport Research Group participated in the Smart Sea Centre of Excellence Annual Seminar titled “Safety, Defence and Green Transition in the Maritime Sector – Whose Concern?” The seminar was organised by the TalTech Smart Sea Centre of Excellence and brought together researchers and experts working at the intersection of maritime safety, sustainability, and innovation.

The event was opened by TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology Rector Tiit Land, who highlighted the strategic importance of maritime research and innovation for Estonia’s future.

Representatives from the Estonian Maritime Academy included Roomet Leiger (Director of the Estonian Maritime Academy), Sanja Bauk, Serkan Turkmen, and Valentin Bratkov. From the Maritime Transport Research Group, Prof. Ulla Tapaninen, Kristin Kerem, Riina Otsason and Kristine Carjova contributed to the programme and poster session.

The Maritime Transport Research Group presented its latest research developments, showcasing work related to sustainable shipping, port governance, maritime digitalisation, and energy-efficient environments.

Prof. Ulla Tapaninen, BALTIC-FIT project coordinator, presented a poster titled “Smart and Energy Efficient Environments & Maritime and Port Governance,” highlighting research directions aligned with green transition goals in the maritime sector.

Participation in the seminar reflects BALTIC-FIT’s continued engagement with interdisciplinary maritime research and national excellence initiatives supporting safety, defence, and sustainable development in the sector.
