BALTIC-FIT ENABLING TO DECREASE SHIPPING EMISSIONS IN BALTIC SEA REGION

The International Maritime Organization has established a goal to reach zero-carbon shipping by 2050 and the European Union has set a target date of 2050 for reaching carbon neutrality across Europe. Now, it is time to focus more closely how the shipping sector as a whole will adapt to the changing environmental regulations, and what kinds of opportunities it brings to the business. In addition, we have to take a wider perspective of the whole supply chain.

The key intention behind initiating the BALTIC-FIT project is to strategically concentrate efforts on the decarbonization of the shipping in Baltic Sea region, which has specific constraints in terms of operations.

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION SCOPE

Each partner of BALTIC-FIT has complementary capabilities in terms of operational (TalTech), technical (VTT) and digitalization (RISE) aspects, which all together can tackle this complex question of how decarbonisation can be turned as a success factor of Baltic Sea shipping.

Operational actions of shipping companies and ports

Technological opportunities
for ship design

Collaboration practices empowered by digitalisation

BALTIC-FIT INNOVATION PROJECT

Catalogue of operational practices in the shipping industry

Analytical report on the potential technological solutions for designing low carbon-emission vessels

Analytical report on the potential solutions for decarbonising shipping and logistics by digitalisation

The analytical studies will be performed involving the Baltic Sea region representatives of industry, shipping and logistics companies, ports

Based on these studies we will develop the Recomendations for authorities and private and business companies operating in Baltic Sea region on how to tackle the issue of decarbonization

ALIGNED WITH high-level strategic priorities

By enhancing collaboration between Baltic maritime stakeholders, BALTIC-FIT will cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the sustainable maritime practices, guiding the region towards environmental sustainability aligned with the high level startegic priorities set on the European and internaiotnal levels:

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships
“Fit for 55” package contributing to the success of the European Green Deal
