The Summer School opened on May 19 at the TalTech Estonian Maritime Academy with an opening address from Kristel Toom, Director for Research and Development, and a warm welcome by Prof. Ulla Tapaninen, BALTIC-FIT project coordinator.
The first lecture, “Ports as a Force for Positive Change”, was delivered by Dr. Maurice Jansen from Erasmus University, The Netherlands, setting the tone for an inspiring and forward-looking week.
This year’s participants include PhD candidates and young researchers from Finland, Sweden, Morocco, Lithuania, and Estonia, representing a diverse mix of institutions including LPRI, EMSI of Casablanca, Linköping University (LiU), University of Turku, Aalto University, Gulf of Guinea Maritime Institute, Vilnius Tech, Lithuanian Maritime Academy, and the World Maritime University.
Day 1 continues with engaging lectures from Secil Oğuz on Port Sustainability and Olli-Pekka Hilmola on Profitability of Shipping, followed by an interactive session with Olev Tõnismaa on the EMERA Remote Shipping Operations Simulator.
Throughout the week, the agenda will cover key topics such as digitalization, GHG mapping, alternative fuels, maritime safety, and more.
With a strong start and a packed agenda ahead, the Summer School promises to be an inspiring experience for the next generation of maritime researchers and professionals.
