The first days of the BALTIC-FIT Summer School 2026 in Helsinki are unfolding under a strong focus on technological innovation, operational efficiency, and practical solutions for maritime decarbonisation. Bringing together researchers, industry experts, and young professionals from across Europe and beyond, the programme creates a dynamic environment for sharing knowledge and perspectives on the future of sustainable shipping.
Participants have already explored a wide range of topics through lectures and discussions led by experts from research organisations, industry, and public authorities.
The programme included lectures on hydrogen fuel cells in vessels by Dr. Markus Rautanen (VTT), alternative fuels and regulations by Janne Valkonen (DNV), and emission measurements by Dr. Kati Lehtoranta (VTT).
Winter maritime operations also formed an important part of the discussions, with Dr. Arttu Polojärvi (Aalto University) presenting research on ice conditions and winter navigation, followed by a lecture from Helena Orädd (Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency) dedicated to practical aspects of winter navigation.
The Summer School also addressed operational and digital pathways for reducing emissions in shipping. Prof. Ulla Tapaninen, BALTIC-FIT project coordinator, delivered a lecture on operational measures to decrease GHG emissions of shipping, while Dr. Mikael Lind (RISE), project partner, explored the opportunities provided by digitalisation to reduce vessels’ greenhouse gas emissions.
With two more intensive days ahead, the Summer School continues to offer a valuable platform for discussion, learning, and international exchange for the next generation of maritime researchers and professionals.
